Public events with visiting Tibetan thangka painters

From the  Emory Buddhist Studies Forum: public events in connection with the return visit to Emory of Tenzin Norbu, Master Thangka painter and Dolmakyap Zorgey, Managing Director of Norbulingka Institute, February 27­-March 27, 2010. All events take place in the Carlos Museum. Please note that all events are free with the exception of the Thangka Painting Workshop and the Children’s Workshop, both of which require a fee. (The fee for the Thankga Painting Workshop fee will be waived for Emory students.) Registration is by calling 404-727-6118.

 
 
In February and March, two distinguished individuals from the Norbulingka Institute—Tenzin Norbu, Master Thangka Painter and Teacher and Dolmakyap Zorgey, Managing Director of the Institute—return to Emory for a residence at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, demonstrating and discussing traditional Tibetan thangka painting techniques. Located near Dharamsala, India, the Norbulingka Insititute is the Tibetan Government-in-Exile’s premier fine arts center for teaching, training, and research.
Public Thangka Painting Class
Saturdays, February 27 – March 27
1 - 4 pm

In this unique five-week course Master Painter Tenzin Norbu will guide participants in creating their own thangka painting. Students will learn about the principles of design of traditional Tibetan thangkas, the pigments and tools used to create them, and the choices that each individual artist makes within the traditional art form.
Fee for the five-week course: $125 for Museum members; $145 for non-members; free to Emory students. Pre-registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Children will have the opportunity to observe and talk with Tenzin Norbu and create their own paintings inspired by the materials and imagery used in Tibetan thangkas. Ages 8-12 years. Fee: $5 for Museum members; $7 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by calling 404.727.0519.

As part of Emory's 10th annual Tibet Week celebration, Rebecca Bloom, Assistant Curator at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, discusses A Visual History of The Dalai Lamas. Tenzin Norbu and Dolmakyap Zorgey will be on hand to exhibit and discuss several magnificent completed thangkas from a series depicting the lives of the fourteen Dalai Lamas, commissioned by His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama.

Visitors may observe and talk with master painter Tenzin Norbu as he paints a thangka that depicts a mandala of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
