From commissioner Jeff Rader and the TABASCO coalition: "Since the intersection of I-85 and Shallowford Road is defined in DeKalb’s Comprehensive Plan as a “Neighborhood Center”, why doesn’t it function that way? What can we do to ensure an appropriate Neighborhood Center for the future? The TABASCO coalition is working with Commissioner Jeff Rader’s office to create a collective vision (residents, institutions and businesses) about the look and functioning of our ideal Neighborhood Center. Long-term, we plan to codify our “vision” and present it to the Commissioners and to the Planning Department, such that they can compare developers’ visions with neighborhood vision. Prior to the economic downturn, we were seeing our aging strip malls and multi-family housing complexes being rebuilt. Though that process is continuing at a slower pace, it is likely to increase as the economy improves. We are becoming more densely populated without discussing appropriate shopping, work, commuting and recreation for that larger population. We have a window now to discuss how we want OUR “community” to look and function."
