The highlight of the one day event will feature keynote remarks from Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond and renowned motivational speaker, author, and trainer Les Brown who will keynote the awards luncheon and expo respectfully.

"This year's Everest Awards and Expo event is the perfect marketing channel for organizations offering business opportunities, franchises, advice or support services and investment opportunities." commented DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Darryl Ford.  "It's more than a celebration of success, it's an awe-inspiring sensation recognizing accomplishments of those that contribute to enhancing the quality of life in DeKalb County in the midst of an economic downturn" added Ford, the Owner and General Manager of Stone Mountain Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Stone Mountain.

The event will begin at 11:30 with the luncheon and culminate with the expo that afternoon. Expo attendance is free to the public while luncheon costs are $75 for members and $90 for non-members. Meet Deuce (AKA Cookie)
Deuce (AKA Cookie) is the happiest boy ever!!!!! Deuce landed himself in animal control when he was picked up as a stray. The shelter workers were so in love with this happy boy that they could not bring themselves to euthanize him long after his time was up. It was a lucky day for Deuce when an Animal Action Rescue volunteer spotted him in his kennel. He fell in love and agreed to foster him until he was adopted!

His foster is a dog trainer so Deuce is getting training as well as a cozy bed to sleep in. Deuce is an amazing boy who is full of life and loves everything and everyone! He gets along GREAT with both male and female dogs. Deuce is about a year old! He is Heart Worm negative, up to date on his shots, and neutered! If you are looking for an amazing, fun loving, active dog for your family, Deuce is the boy for you!!   Adopt Deuce TODAY and complete your family!

Deuce is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and neutered.

To meet Deuce or to learn more about him, please contact susie.jensen@comcast.net or come visit us on Sundays from 1 - 4 at Petsmart on Ponce De Leon in Midtown Atlanta (beside Home Depot & Whole Foods).

Meet Seven
...the short version of the story is: This puppy was rescued from an abusive backyard breeder in Douglas County. The person who took him from the abusive owner gave him to his cousin who intended to keep him but quickly realized he could neither afford the veterniary care nor handle the responsibility that comes with raising a puppy. He was keeping the pup on his apartment balcony all day, and the pup ended up in the ER with a corn cob stuck in his rectum. Yeah, you read that right...  And I work in the veterinary hospital, so that's how I got involved in trying to help place this deserving puppy in a qualified, loving and forever home.

Since he and I both need some luck, I named him "Seven." Can you help me help Seven?

He needs a permanent home.... or even a foster home where he can live short-term until a forever home materializes.

Seven has been neutered and vaccinated. The corn cob "incident" is behind him (pun intended), and he's now healthy as a horse. And if that weren't enough, the vet who examined and vaccinated him last week said she is crazy about him and would adopt him herself if she had the room! Seven is super sweet and relatively low-key for a puppy. He's just a really good boy. We think he's a Ridgeback/Shepherd mix, but there's no way to be sure. He's about 8 months old and just under 50 lbs. He's not a small breed, but he's not going to be XXL either.

If you'd like to arrange to meet Seven to consider fostering or adopting him, just email me at chamblee.abernethy@hotmail.com. For now, he's living at The Village Vets of Decatur, and I'm there most days, all day.

DEKALB WORKFORCE:

DeKalb Workforce Development is introducing a new Job Training and Placement Services program for adults and dislocated workers.  This program delivers an innovative approach to providing assessments, pre-employment workshops and job search strategies to job seekers that include connections to job opportunities. For more, click here.

RECOVERY ACT, ENERGY GRANTS AND JOBS: I'm pleased to announce that the Association of Energy Engineers in Atlanta will receive $462,000 under the Recovery Act to develop a training program for Commercial Buildings Efficiency Experts.

The grant is part of a $76 million, 58-project effort to help make the nation's buildings more energy efficient and cost-effective. It will also support programs to train workers on how to develop and deploy best practices that will make buildings more energy-efficient - resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and energy cost savings for consumers. For more, click

here.

PRESERVING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: In my new role on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I'm fighting for public transportation. This week, I co-sponsored the Public Transportation Preservation Act of 2010 that would provide transit systems nationwide with $2 billion.

Just as MARTA is grappling with its own budgetary difficulties, public transportation systems around the nation are struggling as well. Many low-income workers, older Americans, and people with disabilities depend on transit service to get to jobs and health care. Reduced service and higher fares can have a devastating effect on their quality of life. For more on this legislation, click

here.

HELPING KIDS IN TROUBLE: The Department of Justice recently awarded Georgia a $1.3 million Juvenile Accountability Block Grant. The goal of program is to reduce youth crime and violence.  I will continue to work to strengthen the nation's juvenile justice system, and support prevention and early intervention programs that are making a difference for young people and their communities. eduKALB
A concerned and diverse group of business, civic, community, parents and education leaders has formed eduKALB to improve our Board of Education's leadership by identifying and supporting the most qualified candidates for School Board seats.  eduKALB will also offer guidance and training to interested candidates and incumbents regarding board performance, accreditation standards and 'best practices' identified by the Georgia School Boards Association and other good government groups.

We believe it is long past time to put Classrooms First! and we are writing to seek your support for these efforts.  DeKalb Schools did not get here overnight, and it will take time to improve performance and recapture our reputation for excellence.  Your support is critical to returning our DeKalb County public school system to its former standing.  Lack of action to turn around this decline could lead to the loss of jobs and future employment opportunities for our graduates, or even worse, following the path which recently led another metro-area school district to suffer the loss of accreditation of its schools.  To learn more click here.

Decatur's "Our Community Farm Project"

From the Clairemont Great Lakes Neighborhood Association: Our Community Farm Project is located at 121 Sams Street in Decatur, GA. We are a start-up, urban farm led by experienced Burundi farmers who've come to metro-Atlanta as refugees and supported by a group of Burundi women, joining together to grow food, exchange farming knowledge, and to develop a greater understanding of farming practice in the ATLanta area. The farm will also provide the families who are often facing food security risks with healthy food for their tables.

Our Goal: Working in partnership with Susan Pavlin and Refugee Family Services, our mission is to provide these women with practical farm experience, workshops and trips to local farmers markets in order to create new opportunities in production, distribution and marketing.
It has been awhile since our last farm update, and we invite you to stop by 121 Sams St at your leisure to take a look around. For those of you who saw the farm early on, you will barely recognize it now! More than 20 families are being well fed, as we've been harvesting around 100 lbs. of summer squash each week, along with several bushels of green beans. Our tomatoes are coming along, and we were able to enjoy the first few ripe ones this past Saturday. It's been incredibly exciting to see the fruits of our labor! To see some pictures, please visit our new blog at
http://ourcommunityfarmproject.blogspot.com. From now on, we will update the blog each week.
REGULAR VOLUNTEERING
If you are interested in helping out with farm work during the week, please let us know your availability. The women put in many hours of hard work each Saturday on top of their busy work schedules, but as we all know, farming is not a one day/week job. During the week, we need help with harvesting, watering, weeding, and various maintenance tasks. Let us know if you'd like to come out and get your hands dirty!

You are invited to the 2010 Peacemakers Camp, July 26-31!

This camp, for middle-schoolers, aged 10-14, will be fun, full of adventure, thought-provoking, memorable, and - we hope - life changing. We'll be staying at Koinonia Partners near Americus, GA and living in community. Each day we'll visit peacemakers and their communities, learning about fair trade goods, civil rights work, the Nobel Peace Prize, organic farming and
fair housing practices. Part of peacemaking is also learning to live in community and care for ourselves. We'll share several meals with Koinonia residents, cook together, and share group time each day. We'll make peach cobbler, go on outdoors adventures, swim in a local lake, play games, laugh, and relax.

Your fearless leaders are Marilyn McGinnis, teacher, activist, and parent, and Jonah McDonald, adventurer and environmentalist. Call or email Jonah if you have questions: jonah@surefootadven tures.com or 404-373-8036. For more information, please visit our website:
