Reposted with permission from the Laurel Ridge listserv: "This afternoon [Monday June 4, 2012], a raccoon attacked at cat in day light. Raccoons are nocturnal animals, which leads me to believe that there is something wrong, possibly rabies. Please be aware of your surroundings when you are out and about. Report any suspicious animals to Animal Control at 404-294-2939.
While looking for Animal Control's phone number, I spotted an Alert about a Rabid Raccoon captured on Laurel Ridge Drive testing positive for rabies on May 16, 2012 of this year.
Other information found on the Alert:
Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by a wild animal should seek medical attention immediately.
Watch your pets. If they are acting unusually nervous or aggressive or if they have excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, contact DeKalb County Animal Control at (404) 294-2996, Monday-Friday from 9 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., or (404) 294-2519 (other times).
Pet owners should make sure their animals are vaccinated against rabies yearly.
If you see an animal that you suspect of having rabies please call Animal Control and alert the neighborhood, so that we can all be alert!
Thank you for being vigilant.
