MANA Neighborhood Watch August 31, 2012

From the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association: The Watch has received several reports about car break ins last night.  Some of the cars were locked, many were not.  There were also cars broken into on Wendan and Gaylemont Aug 25th.  There have been two suspicious cars seen driving around the neighborhood.  A white 4 door General Motors car (possible a Le Sabre) and a 95-98 dark blue Ford Explorer.   The Explorer has a rear passenger side taillight out.  If you see suspicious cars and or activity call 911 immediately!

MANA Neighborhood Watch Alert!!!  AUG 31, 2012

AUG 31st

Neighbor on Fox Hills: There were multiple car break ins on Fox Hills Drive and Harrington on Thursday night/Friday morning.  According to the police officer who took the report, several of them, were locked and had security systems.  It appears the thieves must have some sort of device to circumvent car security systems.  Out of my car they took they took some change, 2 GPS devices and chargers.  There was nothing else of value in the car but they ransacked the trunk as well.

Neighbor on Medlock: They ransacked my car even left my light on, back door open, an every console left opened, but I don't have any valuables in my car. So luckily nothing of value was taken. Happened between 230-7 am.

Facebook post: Car break ins at the 2700 block of Harrington. We called the police and filed our reports.

Facebook post:  There was another break in yesterday morning 3 doors down from us at 2318 Hunting Valley.  3 girl grad students had the rental broken into and their bedrooms trashed . They are missing all electronics. This is the 3rd break-in in the Hunting Valley area within the past 2 months.

Medlock had a very informative Neighborhood Watch meeting on August 16th with Ms. Hightower (Public Education Specialist for the Center Precinct) and Officer Anderson from DeKalb County Police.  Ms. Hightower ran through a series of questions that had been submitted.   Several handouts were distributed at the meeting that are posted on the Neighborhood Watch Page.

Notes from the meeting are available on the website at medlockpark.org  Thank you to Cathy Quinones for taking great notes at the meeting and for the fantastic job she does managing the website!

Neighbor on Desmond: My house was broken into during the day between 9:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17th. The burglars took a laptop computer, jewelry, a radio and medication. They must have been in a hurry because they left flat screen TVs and other things. A police report was filed. They entered from the back door (probably using a credit card). My deadbolt wasn't easy to use because the door had swollen. Needless to say - that is fixed. I am going to get an alarm system. There were no cars in the driveway. All the drawers in the bedrooms were pulled out.

Correction:  The Neighborhood Watch Alert Email sent on AUG 17th stated that there was a Robbery on Willivee.  This alert was for a Burglary, not a Robbery.

CRIME TIP:  Suspicious Activities Involving Vehicles Watch For:

Suspicious Activities Involving Vehicles Watch For:

  • Any vehicle moving slowly and without lights or following a course that appears aimless or repetitive in any location, but particularly so in areas of schools, parks, and playgrounds.  Occupants may be looking for places to rob or to burglarize, or they could be drug pushers or sex offenders.
  • Parked, occupied vehicles that contain one or more persons, if it is an unusual hour.  They could be possible lookouts for a burglary in progress, even if the occupants appear to be legitimate.
  • Vehicles being loaded with valuables if parked in front of a closed business or unattended residence... even if the vehicle is a legitimate-looking commercial unit.  More and more professional thieves are taking the time and trouble to customize their vehicles with special signs in order to move more freely without suspicion.
  • Apparent business transactions conducted from a vehicle, especially around schools and parks.  If juveniles are involved, it could mean possible drug sales.
  • Persons that are being forced into vehicles... especially if they are juveniles or females... may mean a possible kidnapping.
  • An abandoned vehicle parked on your block may be a stolen car.

A "delivery man" with an alleged wrong address or asking if someone else lives there.
