Charter school amendment: Jim Smith's opinion

From local resident Jim Smith, with permission, via the Civic Association Network: "The problem as I see it is that the current system lets local school boards prevent charter schools from opening for any reason at all such as with The Museum School here in DeKalb. One of the highest ranked schools in the state was initially denied by DBoE but was allowed to open upon appeal to the state. Then the law was changed to stop the state appeal process.

On the other hand, this amendment is a bald power grab that will result in an appointed board with the ability to spend HUGE amounts of money with NO accountability to voters.  What's needed is a return to the previous law, perhaps with some tweaks to allow more state oversight. Unfortunately, we are not being offered that option."
