Protect Yourself from Mailbox Fraud

From state rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield: A Message from Avondale Police Chief Gary Broden ... Unfortunately, we live in time when we should consider no longer following practices of the past that were once safe and not a problem to those who used them. One practice that people should think carefully about is sending payments or other monies through the mail, especially leaving the postal item in their private/residential mailbox with the flag up indicating out-going mail is needed to be picked up.

Burglary on Desmond Drive

From a neighbor: Our home in University Heights at 2195 Desmond Drive was burglarized last Wednesday, October 7. Entry was achieved by kicking the front door off of its hinges. Sections of the house were ransacked. The stolen items were predominantly electronics and jewelry. A $2000 reward is being offered for information leading to the recovery of the stolen items (contact 404-944-0482). Previously, a theft ring rented a house in the Medlock neighborhood and burglarized a number of homes before a neighbor made a call that led to their capture.

Burglaries in the area

From the police officer assigned to neighborhoods just north of us... It has been an intense Summer and Fall this year. We have been making numerous (10 plus) arrests in reference to burglaries in the Toco Hills, Emory, Sagamore Hills, Melinda Drive, and Lavista Park areas, but they don't seem to be slowing down. ... Just a few heads up, we have had several outdoor storage sheds broken into and thefts from Carports. The suspects are taking lawn equipment, mainly lawn mowers. They are also going into open garages and taking lawn equipment. Please continue looking out for one another and check the storage sheds. If you don't already have a list of your serial numbers on your property, now is a great time to start. .... Officer Jenny Miller

Defense of Your Home: Georgia's Castle Law

From state rep. Kevin Levitas: At the recent community meeting regarding the home invasion in our area, a few attendees asked about but did not receive answers regarding what rights homeowners have to defend themselves on their own property. For this reason, I have set out below Georgia's "Castle Law."

Town Hall Meeting on Crime Prevention

Event Date and Time:
09/24/2009 - 7:00pm
From state Rep. Kevin Levitas: Town Hall Meeting at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Thursday, September 24, 2009. At a recent community meeting regarding a home invasion robbery, several of you expressed concerns about the increase in criminal activity in our area. In response to these concerns, I am hosting a town hall meeting, along with the Tucker Civic Association (TCA) and the Northlake Community Alliance (NCA), that will focus on crime prevention. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of our public safety officials.

Security lights

With permission from Cherie Long via the Clairemont-Great-Lakes listserv: .... We have done a great deal of research on the types of security lights being used in Decatur and elsewhere. It appears based on neighbors reports and anecdotal evidence from the Decatur police that several Decatur residents have had a great deal of success with the security lights that are "dusk to dawn" motion sensor lights which have a dimming feature. The lights remain on at a dimmed level but when motion is sensed they brighten to the full light level for a set period of time.
