From"Wardell Castles" wardellcastles@hotmail.com via Clairemont Great Lakes Neighborhood Association:In January, Friends of Dekalb Animals (FODA), http://friendsofdekalbanimals.com rescued over 100 pets from uthanization at the DeKalb County shelter. (In case you are not aware, pets picked up by our Decatur Animal Control officer are taken to the DeKalb Animal Shelter for ummmm cough-cough "processing".) While 100 lives have been saved, there are many more to be rescued. Unfortunately FODA is out of funds. As a consequence, they are officially putting rescue on hold until they get their veterinary bills paid off and raise enough money to treat/transport more dogs and cats.
For our animal lovers via The Clairemont Great Lakes Neighborhood listserv: Please see the below article regarding poor conditions at the animal shelter in DeKalb county. The actions you can take are outlined. http://tucker.patch.com/articles/call-to-action-for-animals
From the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association: Thanks to all who took notice. Plinko has returned and is ok.
A local resident has reported the presence of roof rats in our neighborhood and offers these tips:
1) closely trim back any and all branches of trees away from their roof lines, or shrubs and bushes well back from roof overhangs – should be at least 2 feet short of the roof overhand or no closer than six feet if it overhangs the roof. Also, do not feed pets outside – or at least don’t leave pet food unattended.
2) keep all pet food, to include bird seed, in metal containers; and
3) don’t leave trash out in only plastic bags.
4) keep yards raked and trimmed – at least don’t let branches and debris pile up that they can seek cover under.
For dog lovers from Janice Knight: I am writing to tell you the story of a little abandoned white pup. On Saturday November 5, 2011 Dana Jones and a very special lady friend had a beer and meal at Melton’s App & Tap just before it closed later that month. As they were leaving Melton’s they spied a small white dog tied to the building next to the Pet store that had closed for renovations. Being the softies that they are, Dana and Johanna went over to investigate. They immediately began to ask all around if anyone knew the dog or had witnessed the abandonment. Sadly, no one had seen or heard anything. So Dana looked into those sad brown eyes and said, “Well I wonder who you will go home with tonight?”, and promptly said, “Me!” And that’s how a sad little waif became Mr. Boo Radley of Harrington Drive, Decatur, GA!! “Boo” is now one happy guy with all the love and care he will ever need. The End. [see photos attached...]
From the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association: Have you seen this dog or know where he might be? His name is Reno. Reno's home is located in the Sargent Hills Neighborhood just South of North Dekalb Mall, by the Quick Trip. Doug - his owner - is really upset about Reno. RENO is 10yrs old. Weighs 50lbs. Primarily black in color with white on his chest, , toes, muzzle, and tip on his tail. RENO did not have his collar on, but had on a red flea collar.
From MANA: Lost dog gets new home; Melton's re-opening packed.
In light of recent reports of potential predators like coyotes, owls, and hawks, we're reprinting this by permission from Wardell Castles which was originally posted to the Clairemont Great Lakes Neighborhood Association listserv: "If you have a outdoors cat and you want to protect him/her from these coyotes (and cars and dogs, etc), here's an article that offers some advice.

Trust me, it can be done. Kay and I've converted two previously outdoor stray cats to perfectly content inside cats. After all, what animal in their right mind would rather be outside in cold rainy weather being stalked by larger predators as opposed to living the life of luxury indoors being well fed, warm, and cared for.
