Atlanta Recycling Center open to all

Now accepting electronics, styrofoam, and latex paint and offering paper shredding service.  "Atlanta residency NOT required. Open to all."  Located in Atlanta's old 4th ward at the Walden School, 320 Irwin St., Atlanta, GA 30312. Open the second Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  See flyer below and attached.

County trash and recycling schedule for 2012

The county sent around a brochure with the 2012 pick up schedule.  It is also available online (pdf).  This week, because of MLK day, Tuesday garbage pick up will be on Wednesday.  Recycling should also be picked up on Wednesday if we read the calendar correctly.  Thursday yard waste and Friday garbage pickup remain the same.  Everyone is encouraged to join the curbside recycling service.  Current participants are reminded to put mixed paper in the blue bin and everything else -- cans, bottles, and plastics -- in the blue bags.  Details can be found online.

County Shred and Tread recycling

Keep DeKalb Beautiful (KDB) will host a “SHRED & TREAD” Recycling Event to emphasize recycling and eco-friendly activities on nationally recognized America Recycles Day (ARD). ARD is a day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products.  DeKalb citizens are invited to bring their sensitive documents for free on-site shredding.

Electronics recycling day

From City of Decatur: Don't throw away that old cell phone, camera or PC component! Save it and recycle it on Saturday, October 29th, 2011 at Decatur's Electronics Recycling event. This semi-annual event has been hugely successful at diverting electronic equipment from landfills, where they may contaminate soil and water.  The event takes place Saturday, October 29th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Decatur High School Parking lot, on the corner of N. McDonough St. and W. Howard Avenue. Electronics dropped off that day will be sorted and disassembled into raw materials or cleaned for re use.  TV's will be recycled for a minimal fee of $10 cash only per TV set with exact change. Hazardous Waste Recycling Event

DeKalb County is having a Hazardous Waste Recycling Event at the Central Transfer Station (3720 Leroy Scott Dr 30030) on Saturday October 1st from 8a to Noon. Get rid of paint, pesticides and other hazardous wastes easily. It's open to DeKalb residents only.

What are household hazardous wastes?

 

Household hazardous wastes are products that contain potentially dangerous chemicals and are no longer in use. These items should not be disposed of in your regular trash because of its potentially harmful effects on our environment. This event will offer our County residents the opportunity to dispose of household hazardous wastes in a proper manner free of charge.

County recycling Q&A

From Commissioner Jeff Rader's office via Civic Association Network newsletter, responses to questions raised at a CAN meeting June 27: 1). Has the county ever discussed "free" or no fee recycling?  2). Can citizens use recycling buckets and not bags? 3). What is happening with discussions about reducing sanitation / recycling/yard waste pick up days?  Commissioner Rader forwareded the questions to the county's Public Works Assistant director Billy Malone and here are his responses.

Recycle Your Life, the massive recycling day, at First Baptist Church Decatur is back! This Saturday, May 21 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm bring household items, clothing, shoes, tennis balls, electronics, toilets, phone books, books and paint. Paint is a dollar a can but will be recycled by Williams Painting and will not end up in the landfill. So join FBCD for a chance to do something with all that Spring cleaning!  [Read more]

Green Fest Event & Concert on the Square this Saturday

From the Clairemont Great Lakes Neighborhood listserv: Posted by: "Greg Coleson": Neighbors, The Concerts on the Square series kicks off this Saturday in conjunction with Green Fest in downtown Decatur. The below is info from the Green Fest site and their press materials. 

Be sure to stop by the City’s Environmental Sustainability Board table for eco themed tattoos for the kids (we are happy to apply these to the adults too!) as well to learn about all that you can recycle in your curb side bins, and more. There will also be information on the City’s DecaturWISE energy efficiency rebate program.

The third annual Decatur Green Fest—hosted by the Dogwood Alliance—will kick off the Decatur Business Association’s Concerts on the Square series on Saturday, May 7 with a FREE, festival featuring live music, green tasting of local organic produce and food, beer, a showcase of equal exchange and other fairly-traded products, green organizations and vendors, art featuring recycled materials, and a children’s activity area. The event runs from 3 – 9:30 PM and benefits the Dogwood Alliance and the Decatur Preservation Alliance.
