Club Pure Closed by DeKalb County

From commissioner Jeff Rader Sep 10, 2009: Today, DeKalb County Government implemented a recent Superior Court decision to close Club Pure in the Williamsburg Village Shopping Center on Clairmont Road. I applaud CEO Burrell Ellis's response to my request this week to review the matter and take action. In revoking Pure’s Certificate of Occupancy as directed by the Court, the County places the business under authority of a new County Ordinance I sponsored last year to restrict Late Night Establishments and Nightclubs in our neighborhoods. Jeff Rader, DeKalb Commission, District 2

Why your property tax bill is higher

From commissioner Kathie Gannon: As many of you may have realized when opening your tax bill, it is higher this year. That’s because the Georgia General Assembly did not fund the Homeowners Tax Relief Grant for 2009. The Homestead Tax Relief Grant (HTRG) program was established through legislation in 1999. In recent years, this program provided homeowners a credit on their property tax bill from the State of Georgia that averaged $200 - $300. Given financial strains on the state budget this year, the General Assembly passed legislation eliminating it and raising your taxes.

Fixing the Budget Process by commissioner Jeff Rader

From commissioner Jeff Rader: Fixing the Budget Process, Aug 29, 2009: One of the most important tasks for the Board of Commissioners (BOC) is approving the county's annual budget. Yet, the time allocated for this task does not seem proportional to its importance. The county Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is mandated to present a budget proposal by December 15. The BOC is required to approve a budget by March 1. With the winter holidays, that leaves about two months for the BOC to review the CEO's budget proposal and to contemplate revisions. [The BOC can add, eliminate or reallocate the dollars, but only within the constraints of a balanced budget.] That time frame also limits the opportunities for public feedback, either at BOC meetings or designated town hall meetings.
