Outdoor Water Use Reminder

From the DecaturMinute via communityradar.com: July 27, 2009 by Catherine. The drought may be over, but it never hurts to post a reminder about non-drought outdoor water use, right? Julie Gyuricza, Decatur’s storm water engineer, emailed me a recap of the state-wide outdoor water use for your reading pleasure: The State of Georgia has returned to a non-drought schedule for outdoor water use. Under a non-drought schedule, outdoor water use is allowed three days a week on assigned days using odd and even-numbered addresses. • Odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. • Even-numbered and unnumbered addresses are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Water use may occur at any time of the day on the assigned days, but to be water efficient, landscape watering should not occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information visit the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ website.

Report on county government websites

DeKalb gets a grade of C-. From Heneghan's Dunwoody blog via communityradar.com: Georgia Counties are not very peachy when it comes to transparency according to the website Sunshine Review (www.sunshinereview.org). A project of the Sam Adams Alliance, the government transparency website has released transparency grades for all county websites in Georgia. Each county was evaluated against a 10-point transparency checklist and issued a grade to determine how open and honest they are with the public they serve.

Update from commissioner Rader: Funding Inequity Unacceptable

Jul 20, 2009 by Jeff Rader One of my goals for this year is to call attention to the status quo of DeKalb County's government. Namely, that government operating in the same "business as usual" manner is counterproductive if the county is going to solve its future challenges. The current economic slump should be a wakeup call to consider government's funding mechanisms and priorities. It seems safe to assume the county's needs will always exceed its budget. Therefore, the allocation of county dollars must be handled in the most objective way possible to ensure efficiency and results.

Millage Rate 101

From Commissioner Jeff Rader: What are all these words that keep getting used when talking about property taxes? How do you come up with the millage rate? How does HOST (sales tax) figure into this? Why does my bill have all these different rates on it, a tax for this, a tax for that? What’s this about rollback rates? As the fall flu season approaches, it is critical that we reinvigorate our preparedness efforts across the country in order to mitigate the effects of this virus on our communities.
